Scooters are full and plenty in our market, but most of them lack the X-factor that some of us are looking for in a scooter – and that, Piaggio has taken care of with its cute, little offering – the Vespa. It has witnessed a host of alterations and updates over the years, and Piaggio have ushered in a model with some visual differences and a bigger engine, called the SXL 150. It still remains a Vespa in every possible manner, but with some all-important changes that differentiate it from other models in the line-up.
Packed neatly within the frame is a 150cc, single-cylinder engine that produces 11.40bhp and 11.50Nm of torque. The motor is air-cooled and comes paired to a CVT transmission. The Piaggio Vespa SXL 150 is BSVI-compliant.
The Vespa has always been a cute-looking scooter, right since the very original model. Unlike the other Vespas, the SXL 150 features a rectangular headlamp with chrome outlining it. Initially, the scooter might appear more of a feminine design, but it appeals to just about anyone. At the front, it sports a tidy-looking front apron with a few faux vents in the middle. It also gets rectangular chrome mirrors and a shapely front mud guard. The side profile consists of curved impressions, while the rear features a compact tail lamp cluster. Also note that there is no grab handle for the pillion, which sort of adds to the scooter’s appeal. Also, it gets blacked-out alloy wheels. The instrument cluster has a black plastic insert above it and it features a digital display too. There’s an odometer, two trip meters a mode button. The quality of the switchgear feels good to touch. In terms of dimensions, the Vespa SXL 150 is 1770mm in length, 690mm in width and 1140mm in height. The engine is a four-stroke unit and is carburettor-fed. The transmission allows for a seamless and trouble-free riding experience. The SXL 150 is a very nippy scooter and accelerates very well, accompanied by a strong mid-range and good grunt at low revs. It loves cruising at speeds of 70kph, and feels at ease in doing so. Refinement is super, and it is very smooth, like all other Vespas. At 114kgs, the scooter feels light and nimble. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 155mm, while the scooter has a wheelbase of 1290mm and a seat height of 770mm.
The Piaggio Vespa SXL 150 has a fuel tank capacity of 8.5 litres. In terms of mileage, the scooter is capable of returning 40kmpl by ARAI, in BSVI guise.
The riding position is upright on the SXL 150, just like it is on other Vespas. There is enough room for the rider and the pillion. The flat seat provides good support. And the rear-view mirrors give a good view of what is behind. The Vespa feels solidly built. It feels nice and rigid when zipping along in traffic. The suspension work well to give a mellow ride quality, with no stiffness. Neither is it too soft. The lower profile tyres tend to provide good grip, allowing for better road-holding abilities. This also results in easy handling and rapid flickability. The scooter turns in quickly and the brakes work well to provide good braking performance. At the front, the scooter rides on single side arm suspension, while the rear gets a hydraulic shock-absorber. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a monocoque full-steel body frame. The Vespa runs on 110/70-11 tyres at the front and 120/70-10 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.
The scooter comes loaded with a slew of features like black alloy wheels, electric start, clock, digital trip meter, chrome rear view mirrors, a digital-analogue instrument cluster and storage bins at the front.
The Piaggio Vespa SXL 150 is available in a variety of shades like Orange, Matt Red, Matt Yellow, Matt Black, White and Blue. Orange is certainly a colour that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
